About hypnotherapy

The aim of hypnotherapy is to help to change unwanted habits and undesirable feelings, using psychological techniques alone. It aims to assist people (clients) in finding meaningful alternatives to their present unsatisfactory ways of thinking, feeling or behaving. Hypnotherapy along with other psychological therapies can be most useful in promoting personal development and unlocking inner potential.

Hypnotherapy is a form of psychological therapy and it attempts to address the client’s subconscious mind.  In practice the hypnotherapist often (but not exclusively) requires the client to be in a relaxed state, frequently enlists the client’s own imagination together with a wide range of techniques to achieve beneficial change.

What is hypnosis?

Healing by trance state has been acknowledged for centuries, and has been observed, in one form or another, in virtually every culture in the world. However the term “hypnosis” (the Greek word meaning sleep ) became popular in the 1800’s, and is not now seen as a true definition of hypnosis. In most respects the hypnotic state is entirely dissimilar to sleep.  The definition used by the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council is as follows “Hypnosis is a state of mind, enhanced by mental and physical relaxation (although not exclusively), in which our subconscious is able to communicate with our subconscious mind”

This state of mind can be brought about by oneself, unaided (self-hypnosis) or with the help of another person. If this person is a trained professional, who utilises the trance state to encourage beneficial change to occur, the process is called hypnosis.

Who can be hypnotised?

The answer to this question is “virtually everyone”

However some are more readily hypnotisable than others and this is depends on the client’s willingness to be hypnotised at the time. However even those achieving the lightest trance state may achieve the desired outcome, given time.

Hypnotherapy is extraordinarily effective, but is not magic

However if the right ingredients are present, if the time is right and if there is trust between practitioner and client, then all their realistic goals are achievable.
